For Parents & Caregivers
Parent Read-Aloud Guide
A simple guide for reading Gideon & Milo stories slowly, calmly, and meaningfully with children.
How to Use This Guide
Read Slowly. Pause Often. Let the Story Breathe.
Gideon & Milo stories are designed for read-aloud moments, quiet conversations, and children who may need time to notice, think, and respond. You do not need to turn every page into a lesson. Sometimes the best reading moment is simply sitting together and letting the story unfold.
This guide gives you a simple rhythm: before reading, during reading, and after reading.
Before Reading
Create a Calm Starting Point
- Choose a quiet place with few distractions.
- Look at the cover and ask, “What do you notice?”
- Let your child point, guess, or stay quiet.
- Remind them there are no wrong answers.
During Reading
Use Gentle Questions
Pause on pages where Gideon or Milo notices something new. Ask questions that invite observation instead of testing comprehension.
- “What do you think Milo noticed?”
- “How do you think Gideon feels here?”
- “Would you step closer or wait?”
- “What helps you feel brave?”
After Reading
Let the Meaning Settle
Some children want to talk right away. Others need time. Both are perfect.
- Ask one question, not five.
- Invite drawing if talking feels hard.
- Use the reading certificate to celebrate completion.
- Try one activity from the free activity pack.
