A simple classroom reading basket needs a book, bookmarks, paper, drawing materials and one reusable question card. Choose a container you already have and keep only the materials your group will use. The basket is a way to prepare for shared reading without adding a worksheet for every session.
For a boy-and-dog story, consider Gideon, Milo, and the Great Shadow by Lester C. Lacey. Gideon is a boy and Milo is his Yorkshire terrier. Check your copy and your setting’s usual selection process before planning a session.
What should go in the basket?
- A complete book: Choose a copy in good condition, and read it before the group session.
- Bookmarks: Use plain paper strips or a suitable printable to save a page.
- Paper and pencils or crayons: Offer a drawing response for those who want one.
- One question card: Start with “What do you notice?” or “Which picture would you like to revisit?”
- A facilitator note: Record the chosen book and the next page or question to return to.
Prepare once, then adjust
Make sure the container is easy to carry and the materials are appropriate for the group. Leave cutting and other preparation to an adult. Keep the book cover visible so readers can recognize what is available. Store personal reading notes according to your setting’s practices.
A three-part session using the basket
- Open: Show the cover and ask one noticing question.
- Read: Share the story, leaving space to look and listen.
- Respond: Invite a question, a drawing or a quiet choice of a page to revisit.
The suggested question card is an original activity prompt, not a quotation or a reproduced page from the book. Use the Classroom Resource for another before, during and after reading structure.
Does every child need to make something?
No. Let readers choose among speaking, drawing, pointing or listening. A prepared basket makes options available; it does not mean everyone must complete the same response.
Does the book come with classroom copies or a teaching pack?
This checklist does not include books, establish a bulk offer or promise a downloadable teaching pack. Check the current Book 1 information and use Schools & Libraries for questions about your intended use or copies.
Refresh the basket after the session
Return the book and reusable supplies. Keep one useful question for the next reading, replace worn paper and remove anything the group did not need. Let the next session shape the contents.
